Triple Victory for RUMSBC at UH Head

This weekend saw all our crews competing in one of the biggest races of the year – the United Hospitals Head Race. After weeks of preparation both on and off the water, each crew was looking to dominate the tideway and take home medals.

Despite the torrential wind and rain, everyone rowed a great race against stiff competition. There was also the added rivalry of alumni crews in both the mens and womens division and it was great to see boat club members both old and new cheering each other on.

At the UH head dinner in the evening, the results were finally announced. The tension in the room was palpable. RUMS picked up three category wins – in the Men’s Senior, Men’s Intermediate and Women’s Senior divisions. A tremendous and well deserved result.

Lets hope RUMS domination continues over the coming months. Excellent times are expected for Hammersmith head, HORR and WeHORR!

Big thanks to everyone who braved the adverse weather to either cheer on the crew or marshall the race. Theres no doubt that a good turn out on Kew Bridge helps a crew power it through to the finish.

If you have any pictures of the event, both of the rowing and the dinner, then please contact Sandy. Lets get em in the gallery so all the world can see how awesome we are.

Happy rowing.

RUMSBC brave snow and cold for training tour

Despite the bitter cold and snow fall, last weekends training tour was a resounding success. All crews took advantage of the calm, still waters Marlow had to offer in order to perfect technique and prepare for UH Head in a few weeks time. As well as improving on the water, the weekend away provided an opportunity for crew bonding. There’s no doubt that those who left London as mere crew members, returned as firm friends and an integral part of their team.

There was also an opportunity to relieve inter-team tensions through the medium of snow. Despite being bombarded with a volley of snow-balls unleashed by the M1st as they disembarked for their last outing, the M2nd wrought revenge by ambushing the vulnerable M1st as they approached the pontoon. Needless to say, a lot of people got wet and cold but hey, thats the whole point of snow.

Big thanks to everyone who organised the weekend and ensured all the boat and kit arrived and returned safely. Special thanks to Max Salisbury who provided excellent coaching over the weekend, especially when we found ourselves suddenly short of coaches!

Looking ahead, this Friday is Crew Dates – a chance to meet rowers from the other clubs for curry and drinks. For more information contact your captains. Then on February 18, one of the biggest races of they year, UH Head followed by the UH Head dinner. Definitely not to be missed! Good luck to all those racing.

Happy rowing

Once again RUMSBC is victorious!

It’s with great pleasure that I can say that RUMSBC have again have put in a sterling performance and come away with a lot of success.

This weekend was the annual UH Novice regatta, the first sprint races of the year and a good competition to get all the freshers rowing against the other medical schools and a place to start developing that healthy rivalry that will last for eternity.

Congratulations to both the men and the women who rowed amazingly well, with the boys defeating everyone who stood in their path to come out victorious and the best Novice sprint crew in UH. Thats the first of what i’m sure will be many more medals to come. We can only hope its a repeat of the perfect season seen last year!

The girls, had a minor hiccup that saw them lose the first race by the smallest of margins to ISCM1 who went on to win the competition, and if the course had been just a few metres longer could have easily won (so I hear). But they regrouped and with a renewed determination to “destroy some people” (I’m paraphrasing), went on to win the repecharge competition! All it means is that there is a point to prove at Allom cup next week and at the Winter regatta in January that RUMSBC Novice girls are the best in UH.

Pictures to come I hope!!

Cambridge Winter Head

Well done to everyone who took part in the head race yesterday at Cambridge. With surprisingly good weather, it was a great way to kick-off the racing season. Many thanks to everyone who came to offer support and encouragement from the river bank – there’s nothing like a ‘middle, middle, middle’ to spur a crew on!

With it being the first time that all 6 crews went to Cambridge, it was a jam-packed day of racing. With the M1, M2 and W1 going in the 2nd division and MN and WN in the 3rd division and the Women then choosing to race again in a IV and a different VIII, fun was had by all.

Cambridge provides us with a great platform from which to work over the coming months and the competition with the other UH clubs will only build as we move through the year.

Times can be found on the Cantabrigian Rowing website for those that are interested.

Next weekend is Novice Sprints, so if you can, come down to the boathouse and cheer on the novices and help them trounce the competition, both on and off the water, with the Novice pub crawl afterwards too.

Winter Alumni and VPs Dinner

RUMSBC is proud to announce the date of this years Winter and Alumni VPs dinner.

After some difficult nights sampling wonderful restaurants (its a hard life), our hard working Alumni and VPs officers Harriet and Sam have set a date time and venue.

The 10th December is the all important date and if you’re reading this and you haven’t got a facebook invite or an email please let us know and we will get the details to you on time, location and how to pay.
As one of the main nights in the RUMSBC calender we hope as many of our current members and the VPs and Alumni as possible can all come together for a night of fun and frivolity and to relive the good times of yesteryear for some.

Crew Selection and Training Tour

Congratulations to all those who made the Men’s 1st and 2nd VIII. With two strong senior crews, it looks like another good year for the club. Remember that the 4th, 5th and 6th of November is the senior training tour to Marlow. Please ensure, if you haven’t already, that you’ve paid for the training weekend as well as your club membership.

Thanks

Fresher’s Fair and Fresher’s Day at the River

As expected, this years fresher events were a huge success, with many potential boat club members signing up at the fair and then joining us for a fantastic BBQ at the boathouse.

Thanks to everyone who organised and helped out with both events. Whether you were forcing the tall freshers to sign up at our stand or flipping burgers down by the river, all input was much appreciated and has gone along way to ensure we get plenty of new additions to the RUMSBC family!

New website!

The new RUMSBC website has been launched! After a few months of hardwork to get the website so good (Thanks to Sandy Wright and Paul Custance), it’s finally ready for general viewing by all our lovely members and provides a source of information on what we do and who we are for new freshers, transfer freshers and sponsors.

So if you like what you see and what to get involved in either rowing coxing or sponsoring us in any way, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us!
